Trump to deliver address at 80th UN General Assembly on September 23
President Donald Trump will travel to New York next month to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the White House confirmed on August 28.
“The President will travel to New York City on September 22 to address the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, September 23,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters during a press briefing.
This will be Trump’s fifth address to the General Assembly and his first appearance there since beginning his second term in office.
During his first term as US President, from 2017 to 2021, Trump addressed the UNGA on four occasions.
In 2017, he made his debut speech. In 2018, he emphasised his “America First” agenda and firmly rejected globalism.
His 2019 remarks centered on nationalism, tariffs on China, and warnings regarding Iran and immigration.
In 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Trump delivered a brief pre-recorded statement that criticized China over the spread of the virus and highlighted peace agreements in the Middle East brokered under his administration.
The UN General Assembly is the principal policy-making organ of the United Nations, providing a unique forum for multilateral discussions on a wide range of global issues. It consists of all 193 Member States, each holding an equal vote in the Assembly.
The 80th session of the UNGA officially opens on September 9, 2025, with the High-Level General Debate scheduled to begin on September 23.
