Today, on June 15, Azerbaijan celebrates National Salvation Day. In June 1993, amid a deep internal political crisis, the looming threat of national collapse, and the risk of civil war, Heydar Aliyev — a prominent statesman and revered son of Azerbaijan — returned to Baku from Nakhchivan at the persistent request of the Azerbaijani people.
On June 15, he was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Just a few months later, in October 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected president of Azerbaijan. In a remarkably short time, he succeeded in stabilizing the country and averting civil conflict. Recognizing the significance of this turning point in national history, the Azerbaijani parliament officially declared June 15 a national holiday in 1997 — celebrated ever since as National Salvation Day.
