Türkiye consults Russia, Iran on developments in Syria
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan initiated consultations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian officials from the outset of the recent political upheaval in Syria, spokesman for the Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) Omer Celik said.
During a press briefing, Celik emphasized that Erdogan reached out to Putin at the first moments of the crisis to discuss the evolving situation in Syria, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"As you may recall, our president immediately contacted Mr. Putin. He conveyed messages from Türkiye and engaged in necessary consultations. We also received and assessed the messages from President Putin regarding the situation," Celik stated.
He added that similar discussions were held with Iranian officials.
Celik underlined that the key focus for Türkiye is to avoid any ambitions for dominance in the region, calling for a united and consultative approach. "It is essential not to pursue the goal of domination. All countries and the international community should come together in a consultative mechanism, which should include both the US and Europe," he said.
Looking ahead, Celik reiterated Türkiye's commitment to continuing its consultations on the Syrian issue with all regional actors. "It is our duty to provide all possible support to ensure Syria can navigate through this difficult period under the leadership of the Syrians themselves," he concluded.
