Turkiye quake among 10 strongest with land epicentre
The earthquakes in Türkiye are among the 10 largest tremors with an epicentre on land that have ever occurred in the world.
The statement came from Edwin Nissan, professor of seismology at the Victorian University in the Canadian province of British Columbia, Anadolu reports.
"What makes them so disruptive is the combination of scale and location in a densely populated part of Türkiye," Nissen said.
According to him, the strongest earthquakes mainly occur in the oceans. The professor noted that the earthquake that occurred last week was the deadliest in the history of Türkiye after the earthquakes that occurred in 1939. Then more than 30,000 people died.
The seismologist added that another reason for the death of a large number of people was the most unfavourable conditions - the tremors occurred in the middle of the night and in winter.
