Türkiye's ANKA-3 attack drone prepares for flight PHOTO

26 April 2023 13:00

The ANKA-3, which has many advantages such as low radar visibility, high speed, high payload due to its "flying wing" design, has hit the runway, counting down the days until its first flight.

According to Caliber.Az, SavunmaSanayiST.com reported it on its Twitter page.

ANKA-3, was developed by the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) and will be the third member of the company's UAV family.

Bülent Korkem, Technical Director for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, explained that the ANKA-3 is a tail-less configuration and it offers various advantages.

Korkem gave the following information about the benefits of the ANKA-3 arising from the design:

“One of them, and the most important, is the low visibility of the radar. Since the aircraft does not have horizontal and vertical tail, visibility drops significantly. With some additional measures, you can increase this even more, further reduce visibility. Experimental design work began in February 2022. At this point, the aircraft has begun taxiing tests. This process will continue until the first flight takes place. Then the process will begin where the mission systems will be integrated and prepared for actual use. The flight date is very close, we will fly it in early May, hopefully until mid-May.”

Responding to questions about the ANKA-3's operational application, Bülent Korkem said the aircraft has a serious payload, can climb to altitudes up to 44,000 feet and can perform combat missions at 40,000 feet.

Pointing out that the aircraft will reach speeds up to Mach 0.7, Korkem made the following estimate: "The low visibility of the radar gives us a high payload at long distances and the ability to operate at high speeds. Thus, we have a large payload. We can use it for air-to-ground attack when needed, supported by the other electronic systems we put on it with payloads. We can use it for electronic warfare to suppress enemy systems on the ground. We can use the ANKA-3 in joint operations with manned systems such as the TF-X National Combat Aircraft, HÜRJET, F-16. They have the ability to share payloads with each other. So, we can say that the scope of this aircraft is very broad. If we make the first flight in a short time, we think that by the end of the year or early next year there will be a state of readiness for the first mission."

Asked about the ANKA-3's armament, Corkem said the aircraft will have a total of seven weapon modules, one of which is centered under the fuselage, two of which are internal and two of which are under the wings.

Pointing out that the weapon modules have different capacities, Korkem said: "The internal station capability in the fuselage is going to be huge. So, we have some serious volume there that this configuration brings. We can carry all the munitions developed in Türkiye so far as part of this system. The internal combat module can carry one of the Mark 83 class guns, or we can carry a lot smaller ammunition, depending on its volume. The first large station under the wing, the SOM-J, can carry Mark 83 class guns. Small arms can also be placed on non-wing stations. So, our nomenclature is very broad in terms of carrying weapons."

Korkem also gave information about a new variant of the Şimşek high-speed target plane, which is placed under the wings of the ANKA-3.

According to him, the new platform is like "Şimşek's big brother" and they named the new product Süper Şimşek.

Various types of homing heads will be used in ammunition options, Korkem said: “Thus, Süper Şimşek will be able to perform air-to-ground, air-to-air missions and will be able to perform tasks such as detecting enemy systems on the ground and suppressing them by installing electronic warfare systems within their own capacities. In one of its latest versions, we will also use this aircraft in a range that can reach cruise missiles. We expect a range of over 700 kilometers."
