A briefing on the outcomes of the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), held in Baku in November 2024, took place at the United Nations building in Turkmenistan's capital, Ashgabat.
The event was organized by the British Embassy in Turkmenistan and the UN Representation in the country, with the participation of the diplomatic corps, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
During the eighth Coordination Meeting of the Climate Group of Development Partners, Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Gismat Gezalov, presented a detailed report on the key achievements from COP29.
“The briefing highlighted the significant results achieved at COP29 and underscored Azerbaijan’s role in international cooperation on climate change,” the Turkmen Embassy in Azerbaijan reported, as shared with APA news agency.
Ambassador Gezalov also provided an extensive overview of Azerbaijan's climate policy priorities, its regional and global initiatives, and potential areas for further collaboration.
One of the critical decisions announced at COP29, according to Gezalov, was the establishment of a new climate financing goal of 1.3 trillion US dollars.
“The financial commitments made in 2009, which amounted to 100 billion dollars, have now been tripled. By 2035, developed countries are expected to increase their contributions to at least 300 billion dollars,” the ambassador noted.
He further stressed that all parties were urged to significantly raise their annual financial investments in climate action in developing nations. “The call was made to increase financial support, both public and private, to developing countries, to reach a minimum of 1.3 trillion dollars,” Gezalov added.
