UAE's Masdar accelerates renewable push in Azerbaijan with wind, solar projects
Masdar, the United Arab Emirates–based renewable energy company, is preparing to launch construction of a 240-megawatt wind farm in Azerbaijan before the end of this year.
The announcement was made by Maryam Rashed Al Mazrouei, Head of Business Development and Investments for the CIS region at Masdar, during the 30th anniversary Baku Energy Forum, Caliber.Az reports, citing domestic media.
Al Mazrouei emphasised that Azerbaijan remains a strategic and high-priority market for Masdar in the field of renewable energy. She confirmed that the wind power project is in an advanced stage of planning and that construction is expected to begin within the year.
In addition to wind energy, she also reported significant progress in Masdar’s solar power initiatives in Azerbaijan. “Our solar power projects in the country are already under construction,” she said, adding that the company anticipates these facilities will begin generating electricity within the next year.
Al Mazrouei reaffirmed Masdar’s strong support for regional efforts to export renewable electricity, stating, “We fully support Azerbaijan’s and the region’s ambitions to export clean energy to neighbouring countries and Europe. Masdar is ready to be an active participant in the planning and execution of such ‘green energy’ export projects.”
She also recalled the memorandum of understanding signed last year between Masdar, ACWA Power, and Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR to jointly assess the potential for offshore wind energy development in the Caspian Sea. While the project is still in its early phases, she stressed that Masdar is treating it with full commitment and expects to move toward practical implementation soon. “Azerbaijan continues to be a central focus for Masdar,” she said in conclusion.
Masdar, officially known as Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, was established in 2006 and is wholly owned by Mubadala Investment Company, the UAE’s sovereign wealth fund.
The company specialises in global renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, waste-to-energy, and green hydrogen. Operating in more than 40 countries, Masdar’s energy portfolio exceeds 20 gigawatts of combined capacity.
The company also plays a key role in supporting the UAE’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and is behind the development of Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, a flagship sustainable urban development.
