UK recalls ambassador from Tehran as Iran executes British national
The UK has temporarily recalled its ambassador from Iran after the Islamic regime executed an Iranian-British national for espionage charges.
The Financial Times reported on Alireza Akbari's execution, with Iranian state media stating that he held various senior positions in Iran’s security and military institutions. He had been accused by Iranian authorities of spying for Britain’s MI6 spy agency.
UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly tweeted that “we’re holding the regime to account”, recalling that the UK has already sanctioned Iran’s prosecutor-general, summoned Iran’s representative in London and temporarily recalled Britain’s representative in Tehran “for consultation”.
“Our response to Iran is not limited to today. We are reviewing further action”, Cleverly added.
Caliber.Az recalls, that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the decision by the Iranian government to execute the dual national "callous and cowardly”, who had been arrested in 2019 and accused of espionage for the British MI6 related to nuclear talks between Iran and western nations.
