Ukraine taking bold steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions amid ongoing war Deputy minister says
Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Viktoriia Kyreieva has said that despite the ongoing war, Ukraine is taking bold steps toward building a low-carbon and sustainable future.
"The steps we are taking in this direction can contribute to climate resilience not only in our country but also in other regions affected by the conflict," she told Report, Caliber.Az reports.
"By integrating post-war reconstruction with climate resilience, we aim to set an example on the path to sustainable development. International cooperation, especially support in financing and technology transfer, is crucial for achieving global climate goals," she added.
Greenhouse gases are substances that trap heat in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere through the combustion of fossil fuels (such as coal, natural gas, and oil), the burning of solid waste, trees, and other organic materials, as well as from certain chemical processes (e.g., cement production). It is removed from the atmosphere, or "sequestered," when plants absorb it as part of the biological carbon cycle.
Methane is released during the extraction and transportation of coal, natural gas, and oil. It is also emitted from livestock and other agricultural activities, land use practices, and the decomposition of organic waste in municipal solid waste landfills.
Nitrous oxide is released during agricultural, land use, and industrial activities, the burning of fossil fuels and solid waste, as well as during wastewater treatment.
