UN top official lauds Azerbaijan's role in achieving climate agreements
UN Under-Secretary-General Amina Jane Mohammed expressed her gratitude to Azerbaijan for its role in facilitating common agreements during her address at the opening of the UN Pre-Conference of Parties on Climate Change 2024 (Pre-COP29) in Baku.
Mohammed emphasized the importance of Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the COP29, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
"I want to thank the Government of Azerbaijan, the Presidency of COP29, as well as the COP28 and the troika [of Chairs] for all the difficult path we have travelled to reach common agreements," she stated.
Highlighting the urgency of climate action, she noted that the world is on the brink of exceeding the critical threshold of a 1.5-degree Celsius rise in global temperatures, warning of severe consequences exemplified by events such as Hurricane Milton.
Despite the challenges, she conveyed a message of hope, emphasizing that the global community is implementing various measures to combat climate change. "The COP29 conference should build on this momentum and translate ambitions and commitments into real economic results. In November, we must agree on an ambitious new climate finance target that matches the scale of the challenge facing developing countries," she stated.
Mohammed called for unity in the fight against climate change, urging the global community to maintain focus, demonstrate compromise, and uphold solidarity. She concluded by saying, "In today's turbulent and divided world, we must redouble our collective efforts to reach the 1.5-degree target and protect those on the front lines of the climate crisis."
