UN: Up to 3.2 million displaced inside Iran as conflict continues
Up to 3.2 million people in Iran have been forced to flee their homes as the conflict continues, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said on Thursday, March 12, warning that the number of displaced is likely to increase.
According to data released by the UN refugee agency and cited by Caliber.Az, most displaced residents are leaving Tehran and other major cities, moving toward northern regions of the country and rural areas in search of safety.
“It is reported that most of them are fleeing from Tehran and other major cities to the north of the country and to rural areas in search of safety. As the fighting continues, this figure is likely to rise, reflecting an alarming increase in humanitarian needs,” the agency said in a statement.
The situation is also affecting refugee families already living in Iran, particularly those from Afghanistan, who are considered especially vulnerable due to their already precarious living conditions and limited access to support.
Many families are leaving affected areas as instability grows and access to basic services becomes increasingly restricted.
