US targets 400 entities backing Russia's war effort with new sanctions

31 October 2024 10:03

On October 30, the United States imposed sanctions on nearly 400 entities and individuals accused of supporting Russia’s prosecution of its unlawful war.

As part of this action, the Department of State has sanctioned over 120 individuals and entities, while the Department of the Treasury has designated more than 270, Caliber.Az reports, citing US Department of State.

Additionally, the Department of Commerce has added 40 entities to its Entity List.

The State Department’s designations aim to hinder sanctions evasion efforts and target entities across several third countries, including China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates.

Sanctions have also been placed on senior Russian Ministry of Defence officials appointed earlier this year. Further designations focus on Russia’s military-industrial sector, including military repair facilities, technology producers, and entities that support the Belarus-Russia defence alliance. Sanctions have also been applied to subsidiaries of the State Atomic Energy Corporation, Rosatom.

All those designated fall under Executive Order 14024, which authorises sanctions in response to specific harmful foreign activities by the Russian government.

The United States reiterated its commitment to using all available measures to disrupt support for Russia’s military-industrial complex and to limit the Kremlin’s capacity to exploit international financial systems and generate revenue to support its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

The US confirmed its continued solidarity with Ukraine as it defends its territory against Russian aggression.

Notably, US Treasury Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo emphasised that the United States and its allies remain steadfast in their commitment to weaken Russia’s capacity to sustain its military operations, vowing to disrupt any efforts to circumvent or evade sanctions and export controls.

The latest sanctions on October 30 mark an addition to the thousands already imposed by the US on Russian firms and their international suppliers since the invasion of Ukraine. However, the effectiveness of these measures has come under scrutiny, particularly as Russia continues to bolster its economy through international oil and gas sales.

A senior Treasury official noted that Russia’s increasingly close ties with North Korea highlight its desperation for support in the ongoing conflict.

Earlier this year, the US approved an aid package for Ukraine, granting the administration authority to seize Russian state assets within the US for Kyiv’s benefit. Soon after, the Group of Seven (G7) nations agreed to a $50 billion loan to assist Ukraine.
