US vice president surges ahead of Trump in voter support

18 August 2024 11:03

US Vice President Kamala Harris (Democratic Party), a contender for the highest post, is currently ahead of her Republican rival, Donald Trump, in terms of voter support in two crucial swing states.

According to a recent opinion poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College, Trump trails Harris in Arizona (45 per cent to 50 per cent) and North Carolina (47 per cent to 49 per cent), despite having won in the latter state in 2020, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

The Republican candidate, however, has garnered more voter support in Nevada (48 per cent to 47 per cent) and Georgia (50 per cent to 46 per cent).

The Democratic Party has significantly strengthened its position following President Joe Biden's exit from the presidential race.

In May, Trump led Biden in Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada with a 50 per cent to 41 per cent margin. Harris has managed to unite Democrats and gain the support of younger voters who were less sympathetic to Biden.

The survey, conducted from August 8 to 15, involved 2,700 voters from four states, with a margin of error of 2.1 percentage points.
