War in Syria could entrap US troops amid rising tensions - media

16 December 2024 15:08

The ongoing conflict in Syria is poised to escalate further, potentially trapping US military forces in the country.

The civil war, fueled by the rivalry between the pro-Turkish Syrian National Army (SNA) and the US-backed Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)—which includes the controversial Kurdish factions RKK/YPG—could take a dangerous turn after the potential collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

The Kurdish attempt to declare independence, a move likely to face strong opposition from the new Syrian authorities, could further complicate the situation. This scenario risks drawing Türkiye deeper into Syria’s turmoil, while also threatening to ensnare US troops stationed in the country’s northeast.

The report highlights the persistent threat of fragmentation within the Syrian opposition, as various factions continue to vie for power. Continued foreign interference by the US, Israel, and Türkiye exacerbates the instability, further complicating any resolution. A potential offensive by the pro-Turkish SNA could force the Kurdish RKK/YPG forces to retreat, destabilizing the region and jeopardizing the security of American forces stationed there.

Currently, large parts of Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and Hasakah provinces in the eastern and northeastern regions are controlled by the RKK/YPG, with US military support. Since 2015, the US has established nine military bases in the area, with the Kurdish factions controlling approximately 25 per cent of Syria’s territory.
