Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, who is on a working visit to Brussels to participate in the Eastern Partnership Foreign Ministers meeting, met with Chief Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of the European Council Simon Mordue on December 11.
Various aspects of Azerbaijan-EU cooperation, including prospects for cooperation on agreements reached in energy security, communications and transport, as well as the process of normalisation of the Azerbaijan-Armenia relations and the current regional situation were discussed during the meeting, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Caliber.Az.
Azerbaijan has increased export of energy resources to Europe and today plays an important role in the energy security of the EU member states under the Memorandum of Understanding on the strategic partnership in the energy sector, signed between the EU and Azerbaijan last year.
Bayramov informed Mordue that there is broad potential in the region to achieve real progress in the peace process after the Armenian armed forces were withdrawn from the Azerbaijani territories in September 2023 as a result of Azerbaijan’s anti-terrorist measures in Karabakh. In this regard, the minister highlighted recent steps taken to establish peace and stability, as well as build trust between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
While informing about the large-scale restoration and reconstruction work in the liberated territories, Bayramov emphasised that the mine threat still remains a big obstacle to these activities and also poses a danger to civilians. Some 340 Azerbaijani citizens have become victims of mine explosions since November 2020.
Emphasising interest in intensifying cooperation with Azerbaijan as an important strategic partner in energy, transport and several other spheres, Mordue said that the EU will continue supporting the process of normalisation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan relations to establish sustainable peace in the region.
The sides exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest. In particular, issues of cooperation, as well as normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, were discussed.
