Israeli PM announces end of intense Gaza phase
Focus shifts to Lebanon border
WORLD 24 June 2024 - 12:05
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the intense phase of conflict with Hamas is nearing conclusion.
He indicated that military attention will now turn towards Israel's northern border with Lebanon, where tensions with Hezbollah, backed by Iran, have escalated in recent weeks, Caliber.Az reports per foreign sources.
Netanyahu affirmed Israel's commitment to continue operations in Gaza until Hamas is eradicated, despite expectations of a phase conclusion in Rafah. The military action has resulted in significant displacement and international scrutiny, including a UN court order to halt operations due to humanitarian concerns.
In parallel, Netanyahu expressed readiness for a partial agreement with Hamas regarding hostages but emphasized the ongoing pursuit of Hamas's elimination post-ceasefire. Internal dissent and pressure from international allies, including the US, highlight challenges in navigating post-conflict governance in Gaza.
The shift northward aims to secure residents and prepare defences against Hezbollah, whose attacks from southern Lebanon have prompted Israeli responses, including strikes resulting in casualties among Hezbollah leadership. Concerns over broader conflict escalation loom, with US officials cautioning about potential vulnerabilities in Israeli defences.
Netanyahu underscored a firm stance against leaving Hamas intact, reflecting Israel's sustained military campaign in response to initial Hamas attacks that claimed numerous lives.
