Ambassador: Azerbaijan determined to hold COP29 at high level
Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Sweden Zaur Ahmadov has given an interview to Diplomaticworld Sweden website.
The ambassador said that Azerbaijan, playing the role of a bridge at the junction of Europe and Asia, will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in 2024 and is determined to host this prestigious international event at a high level, according to Azertac.
The ambassador informed about the COP29 first preparatory meeting, which was chaired by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and emphasised that Azerbaijan’s independent policy and compliance with international law are constantly being promoted at the international level.
Ahmadov noted that Azerbaijan has successfully held many important international events, including the International Astronautical Congress, and this is one of the factors that determines the great trust of the international community.
He also briefed on green energy initiatives and steps taken by oil and gas-rich Azerbaijan to transition to green energy and achieve its goal of obtaining 30 per cent of its energy from renewable sources.
The diplomat noted that the decision to hold COP29 in Baku was made amid joint steps taken by Azerbaijan and Armenia towards normalisation of relations as a result of bilateral negotiations, and emphasised the importance of regional partnership and sustainable peace for the timely settlement of the climate change problem through international efforts.
