Note that, India and Pakistan are facing their most serious military confrontation in over two decades following Indian airstrikes on 6 May targeting sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation, named Sindoor by India, was launched in response to last month’s deadly attack on Hindu pilgrims in Indian-administered Kashmir.
India claims to have struck nine “terrorist infrastructure” sites linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, organisations it blames for the killing of 26 Hindu tourists in Pahalgam. A senior Indian defence source said the strikes targeted the groups’ headquarters. India described the strikes as “non-escalatory, proportionate and responsible.”
Pakistan, however, has reported that six sites were hit, denied any militant presence, and said 26 civilians were killed and 46 wounded. Islamabad condemned the strikes as a “blatant act of war.”
In response, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets, including three Rafale aircraft. While India has not confirmed the losses, local sources reported the crash of three Indian jets overnight.
Heavy shelling and gunfire were reported along the Line of Control, with a state of emergency declared in Punjab province. Pakistan has also closed its airspace for 48 hours, severely disrupting air traffic and shutting down Islamabad’s airport.
