Analyst: Armenia facing dilemma West or Russia
Armenian candidate of historical sciences, analyst Sergey Melkonyan, has said that Armenia is showing that it is ready to cease bilateral relations with Russia and leave multilateral platforms created by Russia.
"Armenia shows by all steps that it is leaving Russia, not only from bilateral relations but also from multilateral platforms created by Russia. Everyone realises that the CIS is not an institutional working structure, but even such demonstrative steps are perceived in Moscow and Washington," Melkonyan said, commenting on Yerevan's anti-Russian policy to "Hraparak" newspaper, Caliber.Az reports.
"Interestingly, even Azerbaijan does not take such drastic steps, as Azerbaijan has its own foreign policy strategy, and all its steps, both towards the West and Russia, are based on this strategy. Azerbaijan understands the necessity to cooperate with all centres of power in the region. There is no point in talking about Armenia's current foreign policy strategy - these are all situational steps. Armenia is trying in every possible way to get closer to the collective West and thus shows that it is ready to take decisive steps that may even be contrary to our interests but stem from the interests of the West,” the Armenian analyst said.
Melkonyan is convinced that the fluctuating policy pursued by Armenia does not suggest anything good.
“Our government has no clear orientation, it has no stable allies, and it does not know which path to choose and in which direction to move under different geopolitical developments," said Melkonyan.
