Argentina celebrate reaching World Cup final with provocative England taunt PHOTO
Argentina’s national team players celebrated their 2-1 victory over England in the World Cup semifinal by displaying a banner reading “The Malvinas are Argentine” after securing a place in the final.
Among the players holding the banner were defenders Cristian Romero, captain of Tottenham Hotspur, and Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United, as well as midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.
The incident could draw attention from FIFA, as the organisation’s regulations prohibit the display of political, religious, or personal messages on the pitch and on players’ equipment.
A similar incident occurred in 2014, when the Argentine Football Association was fined for using the same banner ahead of a friendly match against Slovenia.
The celebrations were also accompanied by fan gatherings in Buenos Aires, where supporters sang songs referring to the Falkland Islands, while flags and banners featuring related slogans appeared in the city centre.
Ahead of the match, Argentine Vice President Victoria Villarruel also addressed the territorial dispute, describing the game against England as something more than just football.
Several clashes between players from both teams also took place during the match.
The Malvinas (Falkland) Islands remain the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
