Armenia open to signing peace agreement at COP29 in Baku Parliament speaker says
Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan suggested that the Armenian side would be amenable to signing a peace treaty on the sidelines of COP29, provided Azerbaijan takes the initiative.
“If Azerbaijan wants to turn COP29 into an event where a peace treaty with Armenia is signed, and statements about the release of prisoners and other relevant issues are made, then it is their choice,” Simonyan stated, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.
He emphasized that the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration could reach out to Yerevan at any time to discuss the specifics of arranging the time and place for signing the peace treaty. “The initiative is now in Azerbaijan's hands,” Simonyan reiterated, underscoring that Armenia is prepared to move forward with the process but awaits action from Baku.
Simonyan's comments follow Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's earlier proposal to proceed with the signing of the already-agreed sections of the peace treaty while leaving unresolved issues for further negotiations. Of the 16 articles outlined in the draft agreement, 13 have been settled, according to Armenian authorities.
Despite this, Azerbaijan has rejected the proposal from Armenia to sign the treaty without resolving all outstanding matters. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry criticized the approach, with spokesman Aykhan Hajizada stating, “The call of Armenian officials to sign the draft 'peace agreement', excluding unagreed provisions, and attempts to leave key unresolved issues in bilateral relations for later stages are unacceptable.”
