Armenia proposes imposing death penalty for high treason
Armenian Prosecutor-General Artur Davtyan has proposed imposing the death penalty for high treason.
The statement came from the press service of the Armenian Prosecutor-General's Office, Caliber.Az reports with reference to the Armenian media.
"The files of criminal proceedings initiated on the facts of treason were considered. The issue of toughening the fight and punishment for this crime is put forward as a result of using modern technologies and methods for the recruitment of Armenian citizens by the special services of the hostile country, especially amid existing security challenges in the region," Davtyan noted.
"Terrible cases of treason are observed. The most severe punishment, up to the death penalty, is required to ensure social justice and security," he added.
The Armenian prosecutor-general noted that proceeding from the research conducted by the Prosecutor-General's Office, Armenia has no international legal obligations to completely abolish the death penalty.
He addressed Head of the Constitutional Reforms Commission, Armenian Justice Minister Karen Andreasyan with a proposal to make such changes.
