Armenia's anti-corruption chief Sasun Khachatryan resigns amid government shake-up

18 November 2024 11:22

Sasun Khachatryan, the head of Armenia's Anti-Corruption Committee, has resigned from his position.

Khachatryan’s resignation follows the departure of Karen Andreasyan, former Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council of Armenia, who also stepped down from his post recently.

Additionally, on November 17, Armenian media reported potential resignations from several other high-ranking officials, including Gnel Sanosyan, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure; Rustam Badasyan, the head of the State Revenue Committee; Vahagn Ghazaryan, the Minister of Internal Affairs; and Argishti Kyaramyan, Chairman of the RA Investigative Committee. However, these reports remain unconfirmed.

Notably, Armenia's Minister of Infrastructure and the head of the tax authorities have also resigned following a stern conversation with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Badasyan and Sanosyan were called to an emergency meeting with Pashinyan.

Additionally, Vahe Ghazaryan, the head of the Interior Ministry, also resigned. Though unconfirmed, it is reported that Argishti Kyaramyan, the head of the Investigative Committee, may have followed suit.

This comes after Pashinyan's recent harsh criticism of the security forces during a Cabinet meeting.

To recall, on November 14, Pashinyan remarked on the "anti-state" mindset prevalent within Armenian society.

As he pointed out, Armenians have lived under artificially created states for over 600 years, with Armenia experiencing independence for only 35 of those years.
