Armenian MP doubts signing of peace treaty with Azerbaijan in Sochi
MP from the Armenian ruling party faction Civil Contract, oligarch Khachatur Sukiasyan has said that a peace treaty will not be signed at the upcoming meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders.
He made the remarks in an interview with journalists at the Sports and Concert Complex before the sixth congress of the Civil Contract party, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Armenian media.
Sochi will host a trilateral meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on October 31.
"Perhaps, an agreement will be reached, but, as far as I know, a peace treaty is not planned to be signed. Maybe some other document will be signed," the MP noted.
While referring to the press, he stated that Armenia would like to sign the Russian version of the treaty.
He noted that "the Western version envisages cultural independence, while the Russian document keeps the status quo and the negotiations on the Karabakh issue".
As for the remark that Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently hinted that the Armenian authorities intend to resolve the Karabakh issue through "Washington's option", Sukiasyan replied that he had not heard President Putin's statement that the Armenian authorities prefer this option.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted at a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club on October 27 that the Washington version of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan envisages Baku's sovereignty over Karabakh.
