Armenian prisoner shot in leg during escape attempt

A prisoner at Armenia’s Armavir penitentiary was shot in the leg while attempting to escape, the facility’s press service reported.

The incident took place on October 22 at approximately 19:10. The inmate reportedly jumped out of a hospital window within the prison complex and tried to flee, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

A prison officer first fired a warning shot into the air, but the inmate ignored repeated orders to stop and managed to reach the facility’s gates. The officer then shot him in the leg, effectively preventing the escape.

Medical assistance was immediately provided to the wounded prisoner, whose condition is now stable. Officials from the Penitentiary Institution (PI) confirmed that his life is not in danger.

The PI has launched an internal investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
