Armenian soldier injured by accidental gunfire during weapon loading

17 September 2024 09:51

A serviceman in an Armenian military unit was accidentally shot and injured during a routine weapon-loading procedure, according to reports from the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

The incident occurred in the Ministry of Defense's N military unit on the evening of September 15, Caliber.Az reports, citing the press service of the Investigative Committee.

Initial investigations revealed that one of the conscripts accidentally discharged his weapon, striking another conscript in the back of the head. The wounded soldier was immediately rushed to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. Medical officials have confirmed that his life is no longer in danger.

The 3rd Garrison Investigative Division of the Military Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case under Part 2, Clause 1 of Article 532 of the Armenian Criminal Code, which pertains to violations of safety regulations during weapon handling.

An investigative team is working to establish the full details of the incident. They have already examined the scene, seized evidence, ordered expert examinations, and interviewed witnesses.

Contrary to earlier reports circulating in some media outlets, officials clarified that this was an accidental shooting and not an exchange of fire between conscripts.

The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new information emerges.

Under Armenian law, individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
