The ITF 2025 Summit concluded in Leipzig, Germany with Azerbaijan officially assuming the ITF presidency for 2025-2026, highlighting major investments in the post-conflict reconstruction of the Karabakh region.
The Azerbaijani delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rahman Hummatov, who represented the country at the event, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The summit gathered over 1,200 delegates from more than 80 countries under the theme “Transport Resilience to Global Shocks.”
Discussions focused on strategies to enhance transport systems’ robustness against global challenges such as natural disasters, pandemics, cyber threats, and geopolitical tensions. At the Transport Ministers’ Council meeting, Hummatov highlighted Azerbaijan’s efforts to develop resilient and sustainable transport infrastructure. He underscored the digitalisation of urban infrastructure, including the pioneering “Digital Twin” project, and stressed the country’s progress in eco-friendly transport initiatives.
Hummatov also drew attention to Azerbaijan’s active participation in regional transport projects and the critical role of international cooperation. He outlined significant investments in the post-conflict reconstruction of the Karabakh region, including the construction of modern highways, airports, and urban infrastructure restoration, vital for regional recovery and connectivity. Azerbaijan’s presidency marks its first time leading the ITF, having been unanimously elected by member states in 2023.
“This presidency is a continuation of our commitment to fostering innovative, green, and interconnected transport systems,” Hummatov said. “Transport is not merely infrastructure; it is a catalyst for economic growth, regional collaboration, and social cohesion.” In addition to plenary sessions, Hummatov engaged in bilateral talks with various delegations to explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation.
The summit also featured an exhibition where ITF partners showcased products, services, and innovations. Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Digital Development and Transport presented its achievements, attracting visits from ITF Secretary-General Young Tae Kim, ministers, and delegation leaders. Founded in 2008, the ITF now includes 69 member countries. Azerbaijan has been a full member since 1998 and continues playing an influential role in shaping global transport policy.
