Azerbaijan demands answers from Armenia on 4,000 missing citizens
Azerbaijan's Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman), Sabina Aliyeva, has urged Armenia to provide information on thousands of Azerbaijani citizens who went missing during Armenia’s 30-year military aggression against the country.
The fate of these individuals remains unknown to this day.
According to official data, around 4,000 people are still listed as missing, including 71 children, 284 women, and 316 elderly individuals.
Aliyeva made the remarks in a statement marking 30 August, the International Day of the Disappeared.
“The issue of missing Azerbaijani citizens has been repeatedly raised with international organisations. Under the Geneva Conventions, Armenia is obliged to provide information about our citizens,” Aliyeva said.
“As the Human Rights Commissioner of the Republic of Azerbaijan, I pay deep respect to the memory of those who disappeared as a result of war and other circumstances. I emphasise once again that the international community and global organisations must intensify their efforts to clarify the fate of around 4,000 people."
She added that Armenia must fulfil its obligations under international humanitarian law.
