Azerbaijan, EU discuss energy cooperation, strategic corridors

28 January 2026 19:10

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, met with Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General for Enlargement and the Eastern Neighbourhood at the European Commission, to discuss key aspects of energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union on January 28.

According to the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry, the talks focused on priorities within the strategic energy partnership, including the role of the Southern Gas Corridor in strengthening Europe’s energy security. The sides also discussed the potential accession of new countries to the list of buyers of Azerbaijani natural gas, Caliber.Az reports.

It was noted that Azerbaijan supplied 12.8 billion cubic metres of gas to Europe in 2024. The meeting also addressed regional electricity transmission initiatives, including planned projects across the Black Sea and along the Nakhchivan–Georgia route.

Particular attention was given to a proposed energy route linking Nakhchivan, mainland Azerbaijan and Türkiye via the Zangezur Corridor, which is expected to serve as a strategic energy link connecting Central Asia with Europe.

In addition, the parties reviewed opportunities for cooperation between Azerbaijan and European companies in the development of renewable energy projects.

Discussions also covered interaction between Azerbaijan and the EU within the frameworks of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the Green Energy Corridor consultative mechanisms.
