Azerbaijan, Germany discuss renewables, gas and energy transition PHOTO

03 June 2026 11:50

Azerbaijan and Germany discussed cooperation on gas supplies, the energy transition, and low-carbon solutions.

Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy told domestic media that the discussions took place during a meeting between Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and Ulf Heitmüller, Chairman of the Executive Board of the German company VNG AG, on the sidelines of Baku Energy Week.

The sides exchanged views on the current situation in the global energy market, supply security amid the energy crisis, market diversification, and the expansion of international energy cooperation.

Issues related to the energy transition, the development of renewable energy, battery energy storage systems, and the modernisation of the energy system were also in focus.

It was noted that 11 industrial-scale solar and wind energy projects are already being implemented in Azerbaijan, which in the coming years will account for a significant share of the country’s installed capacity. These projects are expected to ensure savings of natural gas and expand export opportunities. Investments are also increasing in strengthening the grid and improving the resilience of the energy system.

The sides also discussed the role of hydrogen, biomethane, and other alternative sources in the future energy system, as well as the importance of electricity transmission projects between Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Europe.
