Azerbaijan, IAEA discuss nuclear standards, international collaboration

25 September 2024 15:33

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi as part of the high-level week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on September 24.

The sides expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the IAEA, exchanging views on ongoing joint projects and future prospects, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Caliber.Az.

Bayramov emphasised that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to maintaining and enhancing nuclear safety, supporting efforts to expand international collaboration in this field. He noted that the IAEA plays a crucial role in establishing nuclear safety regulations and standards, highlighting the agency's significance in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The minister also stated that Azerbaijan and the IAEA have established technical cooperation in agriculture, medicine, petrochemicals, and environmental protection. During the meeting, the sides discussed potential collaboration within the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The meeting concluded with a ceremony to sign the Country Programme Framework for Technical Cooperation between Azerbaijan and the IAEA for 2024-2029.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan this November. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. During two weeks, Baku will become a global hub, welcoming around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system.  The abbreviation COP means "Conference of the Parties" and refers to the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC. The Convention has 198 member states. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, the COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in Berlin in March 1995, and its secretariat is based in Bonn.
