Azerbaijan, IEC move to expand cooperation in energy sector PHOTO

Azerbaijan Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov met in Baku with Philippe Metzger, Secretary-General and CEO of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), to discuss ways to expand cooperation between Azerbaijan and the organisation.

The talks focused on cooperation under Azerbaijan’s associate membership in the IEC, as well as the application of international standards in energy transition, electrification, renewable energy, energy efficiency and emerging technologies, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry.

“Metzger highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s growing role in the global energy and climate agenda, particularly the initiatives it put forward in the fight against climate change during its COP29 presidency. It was noted that the associate member status obtained by Azerbaijan this year opens up new opportunities for cooperation. It was emphasised that the IEC is ready to support Azerbaijan in standardisation and conformity assessment in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics, clean energy and energy efficiency,” the information said.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of drawing on the IEC’s technical expertise and standardisation mechanisms to facilitate the deployment of modern technologies in projects being implemented in Azerbaijan’s energy sector.

The participants further noted that electrification is becoming one of the main trends shaping the future development of the global energy system and economy. In this regard, they stressed that the focus should be not only on creating new power generation capacity, but also on developing modern infrastructure capable of transmitting, exchanging and delivering electricity to consumers.

Against this backdrop, the sides exchanged views on the Caspian–Black Sea–Europe Green Energy Corridor project.

The meeting also emphasised the need to expand cooperation with the IEC through the National Electrotechnical Committee and relevant technical working groups, as well as to increase the participation of Azerbaijani specialists in the development of international standards.
