Azerbaijan launches project to connect Nakhchivan via power grid PHOTO / VIDEO

Construction has officially begun on the Zangezur power transmission line, a major project aimed at connecting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to Azerbaijan’s main electricity grid and establishing a critical link in the Azerbaijan-Türkiye-Europe international energy corridor.

AzerEnergy OJSC is leading the effort, building a high-voltage 330-kilovolt double-circuit line capable of transmitting 1,000 megawatts, Caliber.Az reports, citing the company.

The line will stretch 74 kilometres from Jabrayil to Aghband and run parallel over 105 kilometres from Nakhchivan to the Ordubad border, navigating challenging mountainous terrain along the Araz River.

The next phase includes a 44-kilometre line crossing the Zangezur corridor to connect with existing infrastructure toward Aghband and Ordubad. In Nakhchivan city, a new 330 kV substation is under development, with 49 hectares of land already mobilised for construction.

Looking ahead, the Azerbaijan-Türkiye-Europe energy corridor will expand further with a 230-kilometre transmission line linking Nakhchivan to Türkiye, featuring the country’s first 400 kV-class converter substation, a milestone for Azerbaijan’s power infrastructure.

Officials say the project will fully integrate Nakhchivan into Azerbaijan’s national electricity system, end the region’s dependence on foreign frequency regulation, and open access to European energy markets.

The Zangezur transmission line is regarded as one of the largest and most strategic energy initiatives in Azerbaijan’s history, set to significantly enhance regional connectivity and energy security.
