Azerbaijan promises exemplary COP29 with broad focus on global issues

19 July 2024 18:52

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev has pledged to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in a manner that sets a new standard for global climate summits.

Babayev made these remarks at a press conference dedicated to Azerbaijan's chairmanship in COP29, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.

In a recent statement, he highlighted that COP29 will address a broad spectrum of issues beyond climate change, including trade, energy, digitalisation, education, healthcare, tourism, transport, and gender equality.

"Our aim is to bring all parties together and ensure that no one is left behind," Babayev said.

He emphasised that the conference will focus on all communities impacted by climate change, underlining Azerbaijan's commitment to sustainable development and inclusive outcomes.

"We will spare no effort to achieve sustainable development and address the needs of those most affected by climate change," Babayev added.

The minister emphasised that the conference will encompass all sectors of society and state organisations, reflecting a comprehensive approach to tackling climate-related issues.

“The agenda will address a wide range of topics including air emissions in trade, energy, tourism, and transport. Additionally, COP29 will tackle critical themes such as gender equality, education, and urbanization,” he said.

"We aim to cover all the important aspects of life at COP29. Inclusivity is our core principle, and we are committed to ensuring that our discussions and decisions lead to sustainable development and inclusive outcomes," Babayev said.

“One of the central goals of COP29 is to advance global efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The conference will feature discussions on national adaptation plans, action plans, and various initiatives that carry both global and regional significance,” he noted.

Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
