Azerbaijan’s first national tanker “Lachin” marks 5 years of service Recognized by UK as one of world’s best
The first national tanker, “Lachin”, built in independent Azerbaijan, has now completed five years since its commissioning.
Mehman Mehdiyev, head of the press service of Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Closed Joint Stock Company (ASCO), told Caliber.Az that the vessel was constructed at Baku Shipyard.
The commissioning ceremony took place on December 13, 2019, with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev.
Over the past five years, the “Lachin” has completed 68 voyages, transporting a total of 415,135 tons of oil and oil products. The tanker boasts a cargo capacity of 9,190 tons, a length of 141 metres, a width of 16.9 metres, and a speed of 10 knots.
In 2019, the prestigious Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) in the United Kingdom recognized the “Lachin” tanker as one of the 50 best ships in the world.
Today, the “Lachin”, alongside other vessels in the ASCO fleet, remains a key component in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, strengthening Azerbaijan’s position in global cargo transportation.
