Azerbaijan's Ombudsman office investigates Armenian war crimes
In order to investigate war crimes committed by Armenia both during the Patriotic War and in the post-war period, monitoring is underway, according to the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva.
Aliyeva, addressing the VII International Scientific and Practical Conference “Problems of the Protection of Human Rights: Exchange of Positive Experience of Ombudsmen on Their Powers”, on October 18,
provided information on the activities of the Azerbaijan Ombudsman Institute in the relevant direction, Report informs.
Noting that the war and terrorist attacks that have occurred in recent years have led to a violation of fundamental human rights and a humanitarian crisis, the Ombudsman also spoke about war crimes committed on Azerbaijani lands, which were under Armenian occupation for almost thirty years.
Aliyeva said as a result of the Second Karabakh War, Azerbaijani lands were liberated from occupation in line with the requirements of international law and the territorial integrity of the country was restored.
The Ombudsman emphasized that appeals, reports, and statements containing evidence of gross violations of international humanitarian law are addressed to relevant international organizations and structures operating in the field of human rights protection.
She also noted that in the First Karabakh War, about 4 thousand Azerbaijanis went missing, about whose fate Armenia is yet to provide information.
Speaking about the mine terror committed by the Armenian side in the Azerbaijani territories liberated from occupation, Aliyeva said after the Second Karabakh War, hundreds of people in Azerbaijan became victims of mines.
In conclusion, the Ombudsman expressed her hope that relations between institutions in the field of human rights protection will continue to strengthen, and effective activities and constructive dialogue will continue.
