Azerbaijan’s Zangilan and Shayifli hydropower plants produce over 54 million kWh combined in a year
The small hydropower plants Zangilan and Shayifli have produced a combined 54.9 kWh of electricity since beginning operations through May 2025, the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan announced.
“Since the start of operation until May of this year, the small hydropower plant (SHP) Zangilan generated 25.1 million kWh, while the SHP Shayifli produced 29.8 million kWh,” the Ministry stated on X, Caliber.Az reports.
Notably, the small hydropower plants Zangilan and Shayifli, constructed on the Okhchuchay River in the Zangilan district, were commissioned on May 18, 2024. The Zangilan SHP has a total capacity of 10.5 MW, consisting of two hydropower units with a capacity of 5.25 MW each. Similarly, the Shayifli SHP has a total capacity of 10.5 MW, also made up of two hydropower units of 5.25 MW each.
To recall, the inauguration of the SHPs took place on May 18, 2024, with the attendance of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
According to the Azerbaijani president's press service, in line with the green energy zone concept, the Zangilan and Shayifli SPPs will produce environmentally friendly energy. They are equipped with digital systems for remote control and data transmission to the centre via a micro SCADA system. New high-voltage transmission lines spanning 25 kilometres and a 24-core optical cable line were installed.
