Azerbaijan sees growth in electricity generation, highlights renewable energy progress PHOTO

18 February 2025 13:08

Azerbaijan's total electricity generation reached 2.493 billion kWh In January 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country's energy sector.

The report, shared by Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov on his social media account X, highlights the country's ongoing energy developments, Caliber.Az reports.

Minister Shahbazov highlighted that the electricity generation reflects steady growth in the sector, with the country continuing to prioritize advancements in renewable energy sources. He also pointed to a positive trade balance, noting that Azerbaijan exported 157.4 million kWh of electricity while importing 11.2 million kWh in the same month.

“According to operational data for January of this year, electricity generation amounted to 2,493.4 million kWh, exports to 157.4 million kWh, and imports to 11.2 million kWh. Compared to the same period last year, electricity generation from renewable energy sources, including hydropower plants, increased by 96.4 million kWh, reaching a total of 268.5 million kWh,” Minister Shahbazov posted.

Azerbaijan is recognized as one of the countries with significant potential for renewable energy sources. The country’s technical potential for onshore renewable energy is estimated at 135 GW, while its offshore renewable energy potential reaches 157 GW. The economic potential of renewable energy sources is estimated to be 27 GW, which includes 3,000 MW of wind energy, 23,000 MW of solar energy, 380 MW of bioenergy, and 520 MW from mountain rivers.

Despite its vast wealth in traditional energy resources and its global recognition as an energy exporter, Azerbaijan places significant emphasis on the development and utilization of renewable energy sources. Strengthening the role of renewable energy is a key objective of the country's energy security policy, which is being implemented under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev.

To support these efforts, the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency was established by Presidential Decree on September 22, 2020. The agency’s charter was also approved, marking a significant step toward the promotion and expansion of renewable energy within the country. This initiative aligns with Azerbaijan’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix and achieving sustainability goals for the future.
