Azerbaijan, Serbia face selective application of international law, double standards - FM Bayramov

23 December 2024 15:13

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said that Azerbaijan and Serbia have faced selective application of international law and double standards as he addressed the Ambassadors’ Conference in Serbia.

In his speech, Bayramov detailed the political, economic, energy, and humanitarian aspects of the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Serbia. He also discussed the challenges both countries face and their joint approach to addressing them, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Caliber.Az.

The Azerbaijani FM highlighted Azerbaijan's significant role in the energy diversification of Europe, emphasizing the results of cooperation with Serbia in gas exports this year. He also noted that the development of green energy remains a priority for Azerbaijan, mentioning the Black Sea submarine energy cable project and the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan in the field of green energy. Bayramov stressed that these initiatives are crucial in connecting Europe and Central Asia through the Caspian and Black Sea basins.

FM Bayramov also provided an insight into the outcomes of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, recently held in Azerbaijan. He shared details of the agreement on a new climate finance target, the completion of negotiations on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and the launch of the Loss and Damage Compensation Fund.

Further, Bayramov highlighted that both Azerbaijan and Serbia, having gained independence around the same historical period, have faced selective application of international law and double standards. He emphasized that both countries understand the importance of not relying on foreign actors, maintaining neutrality in geopolitical conflicts, and prioritizing direct negotiations to avoid external manipulation and interference.

Bayramov concluded by underscoring that Azerbaijan and Serbia share common values in their foreign policies, particularly the principles of respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov is on a working visit to Belgrade, Serbia, to discuss key aspects of the country's strategic partnership with Serbia.
