Azerbaijan slams European Parliament resolution as “prejudiced political act” UPDATED
Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament) has adopted a formal statement sharply condemning a resolution passed by the European Parliament on December 18, describing it as biased, politically motivated, and based on false information.
The full text of the statement was made public following its adoption by lawmakers, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
In the document, the Milli Majlis “strongly condemns” the European Parliament’s resolution and “categorically protests against this prejudiced political act,” arguing that it relies on “false information and fabricated claims” and represents an attempt to portray criminal acts as political issues while interfering in Azerbaijan’s judicial processes.
The statement accuses the European Parliament of political hypocrisy, alleging that it selectively uses human rights rhetoric for “concealed ends and destructive undertakings.” Azerbaijani lawmakers recalled that the European Parliament remained largely silent during what they described as the 30-year occupation of Azerbaijani territories, the destruction of cities and cultural heritage, and the displacement of nearly one million people.
By contrast, the document notes, the European Parliament adopted more than 10 “disgraceful resolutions” against Azerbaijan following the restoration of its territorial integrity after the 44-day Patriotic War and subsequent anti-terrorist measures.
The Milli Majlis further claimed that the European Parliament had been used as “one of the principal instruments of the hybrid attacks” against Azerbaijan ahead of and during COP29, arguing that the resolution-adoption process is driven by specific interest groups. It also criticized what it described as a lack of understanding among many Members of the European Parliament regarding the content of resolutions they vote on, calling this evidence of the “deplorable condition” of European parliamentarism.
The statement also referenced corruption allegations within the European Parliament, asserting that certain resolutions serve as quid pro quo for material benefits. It further accused the body of providing a platform for Islamophobic and Turkophobic sentiments, describing the resolution as part of a broader plan targeting Azerbaijan as “an inseparable part of the Islamic and Turkic world.”
Highlighting recent diplomatic developments, the Milli Majlis said that President Ilham Aliyev “won peace just as he won the war,” crediting his policies with maintaining stability in the South Caucasus. It argued that progress in the Azerbaijan–Armenia peace process, achieved at the Washington Summit on August 8, 2025, with mediation by US President Donald Trump, runs counter to the interests of certain external actors.
Concluding the statement, the Milli Majlis reiterated its “resolute rejection” of the European Parliament resolution, stressing that such documents “can in no way have an impact upon Azerbaijan nor sway our country from her path.”

The resolution adopted by the European Parliament (EP) on December 18 against Azerbaijan is unjust and reflects a dismissive attitude toward the country’s state sovereignty, Speaker of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova stated.
Gafarova stressed that Azerbaijan would not remain silent in the face of what it views as politically motivated and biased actions. She underscored that Azerbaijan remains open to cooperation based on mutual respect and the absence of double standards, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“No institution has the right to adopt such an attitude toward our country,” the speaker stated, adding that Azerbaijan will continue to respond firmly and decisively to actions it considers prejudiced.
Gafarova also noted that the agenda of the upcoming parliamentary session includes the item titled “On the Approval of the Statement of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan.” According to her, the statement is intended as a response to the hearings held in the European Parliament and the resolution adopted thereafter, which she described as containing false accusations.
To recall, the European Parliament adopted a resolution alleging that “the Azerbaijani authorities have misused national security provisions as instruments of judicial harassment and as a means of criminalising freedom of expression, peace advocacy, and public criticism within the country.”
