Azerbaijan to build key power line linking East Zangezur, Nakhchivan via Iran

A new power transmission line will be constructed to connect the East Zangezur region of Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through Iranian territory.

This announcement was made during a meeting between Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev, who co-chairs the Azerbaijan-Iran State Commission on Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation, and Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh, who serves as the Iranian co-chair of the commission, Caliber.Az reports via local media. 

The two officials expressed confidence that the construction of this power transmission line would play a crucial role in enhancing energy security in the region. Additionally, it is expected to significantly bolster cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran in the energy sector, particularly in electricity generation and distribution. The project is seen as a step forward in strengthening bilateral ties and ensuring a reliable energy infrastructure across the two neighbouring countries.

By integrating with Türkiye’s railway network, the Zangezur Corridor will offer a direct path into European markets. Its strategic location could play a significant role in global trade, with the potential to benefit Eurasian economies, collectively worth $1.1 trillion in GDP.

China has shown interest in the corridor as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, while the Zangezur Corridor also aligns with the objectives of the Middle Corridor, a vital modern trade route connecting East Asia with Europe, echoing the ancient Silk Road.
