Azerbaijan to extend gas deliveries to Nakhchivan via Iran

26 August 2025 20:53

Azerbaijan has reached an agreement to extend the supply of natural gas to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through Iranian territory, SOCAR has confirmed.

The existing contract is set to expire this year, and a new agreement has now been reached, with the document currently in the process of being signed, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

Official figures indicate that Nakhchivan’s annual gas demand ranges between 260 million and 300 million cubic metres.

To meet this need, Azerbaijan signed a swap agreement with Iran in 2005, under which gas is delivered from Julfa to Nakhchivan, while Iran receives an equivalent volume from Azerbaijan via Astara.

According to SOCAR, 188.5 million cubic metres of gas were transported to Nakhchivan via Iran from January 1 to August 21, 2025. Gas deliveries along this route have been ongoing since 2006.

Separately, SOCAR noted that the recently commissioned Iğdır–Nakhchivan pipeline, which became operational on March 5, has not yet begun transporting gas.

The pipeline has a capacity of 2 million cubic metres per day.
