Azerbaijani deputy FM declares religious freedom as fundamental right
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov has said that freedom of religion is a fundamental human right in Azerbaijan.
Mammadov made these remarks during the panel discussion titled “Ensuring Equal Rights for All: Positive Experiences and Challenges” at the International Symposium of Ombudsmen, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He underscored that Azerbaijan, known for its rich ethnic and religious diversity, continues actively collaborating with various UN organisations, promoting harmony among its more than 50 ethnic and religious communities. Despite being a predominantly Muslim country, Azerbaijan ensures that non-Muslim communities can live freely and openly practice their beliefs. Furthermore, the government provides financial support to religious communities, encouraging their growth and development.
The International Symposium of Ombudsmen on “Strengthening the Rule of Law: The Role of Ombudsmen and National Human Rights Institutions” commenced in Baku on June 18. This symposium holds great importance for reinforcing and advancing the values of independence, sovereignty, democratic principles, the rule of law, and human rights in Azerbaijan. A key topic on the agenda is the rights of refugees, with particular focus on the forced deportation and ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis from Western Azerbaijan—territory within Armenia—beginning in the early 20th century.
Following these tragic expulsions, no Azerbaijanis remained in Armenia, and the region’s ancient historical, cultural, religious, and spiritual heritage—including monuments, mosques, and cemeteries—was systematically destroyed. Achieving historical justice necessitates the peaceful and secure return of these displaced people to their ancestral homeland. Armenia must recognise and respect Azerbaijanis’ right to return to their native lands, a critical step toward lasting peace, reconciliation, and the protection of human rights in the region.
