Azerbaijani diplomat blasts some states for stepping up insidious interests in region Address to UN

Azerbaijan has restored its territorial integrity, prompting a number of powers to step up efforts to promote their own interests in the region.

Tofig Musayev, Azerbaijan's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, made the remark at an open debate on "Promoting Conflict Prevention - Empowering All Actors Including Women and Youth" at the UN Security Council, Report says.

Musayev noted that Armenia should start strictly complying with its international obligations, abandon territorial claims against Azerbaijan and stop spreading disinformation in order to establish lasting peace in the region. Yerevan should also repair the damage caused to Azerbaijan by military aggression and occupation and take a responsible part in normalising interstate relations, he said.

The diplomat recalled that in the 1990s the international community failed to prevent Armenia's aggression against Azerbaijan and, as a result, the occupation of Azerbaijani territories. UN Security Council resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884, unanimously adopted in 1993, were not implemented for 27 years, Musayev stressed.

"Azerbaijan liberated its lands from occupation, restored its sovereignty and territorial integrity and eliminated the threat of violent separatism. Now some states, which turned a blind eye to gross violations of the rights of hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons, have intensified their efforts to promote their own insidious interests in the region," he said.

Musayev stressed that Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to ensuring peace and security in the region, as well as to the full, equal and meaningful participation of women and youth in this process: "We are proud of the contribution of Azerbaijani women to the UN peacekeeping, de-mining and post-conflict development processes."
