Azerbaijani MFA congratulates nation on WWII victory anniversary
The Azerbaijan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has congratulated the people of Azerbaijan on the 81st anniversary of the Victory over Fascism.
The message was published on the Ministry’s official page on the social media platform X.
“We congratulate our people on the 81st anniversary of the Victory over Fascism.
During the Second World War, the Azerbaijani people displayed great heroism and made a significant contribution to the victory over fascism, both at the front and behind the lines.
We honour the memory of our compatriots who died during the war and wish our veterans good health and a long life,” the post reads.
Azerbaijan made a significant contribution to the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany during World War II, particularly through its strategic resources and manpower.
The city of Baku served as the main oil-producing center of the Soviet Union, supplying around 70–80% of its total oil output during the war. This fuel was essential for powering tanks, aircraft, and other military equipment, making Azerbaijan a key logistical backbone of the war effort. The importance of these resources was underscored by Nazi Germany’s 1942 campaign toward the Caucasus, which aimed in part to seize Baku’s oil fields.
At the same time, approximately 600,000 Azerbaijanis were mobilised into the Red Army, with about half of them losing their lives in the conflict. Azerbaijani soldiers took part in major battles such as Stalingrad, Kursk, and the final assault on Berlin.
More than 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, including prominent military figures such as Hazi Aslanov, who received the honour twice. In addition to frontline contributions, Azerbaijan also played a crucial role on the home front, producing aviation fuel, lubricants, and other military supplies, while Baku functioned as a major industrial and medical hub supporting Soviet forces throughout the war.
