Azerbaijani parliamentary autumn session begins with key discussions
Another plenary session of the Azerbaijani parliament’s autumn session has commenced.
The agenda for the meeting, chaired by Speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament Sahiba Gafarova, includes the discussion of 15 issues, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Several key legislative initiatives, including the bill on changes to the Republic of Azerbaijan's laws "On the Status of Municipalities" and "On Administrative Oversight of Municipal Activities" (third reading) are being discussed. The agenda includes the bill on changes to the Migration Code of Azerbaijan and the law "On State Duties" (second reading).
Gafarova noted that 33 years ago, on this day, the restoration of Azerbaijan's state independence renewed people's aspiration for sovereignty.
She emphasised that the Azerbaijani people were granted independence twice.
"The first time, the Democratic Republic gained independence in 1918 but existed only 23 months. The second time, in the early 1990s, Azerbaijan faced a challenging situation marked by significant governance errors, creating a real threat of civil war. The existence of the state and the fate of people were in jeopardy. Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev opposed the will of global powers and altered their plans. His return to politics began with his election as chairman of the Azerbaijani Supreme Council. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev continues the strategy of the national leader. Under his leadership, Azerbaijan's historical lands were liberated from 30-year-Armenian occupation. Azerbaijan has emerged as a leader in the South Caucasus and a country with a significant voice on the global stage," she said.
