Azerbaijani security chief notes need for joint efforts against international terrorism
With the organisational support of the State Security Service, the second Security Forum on "Contemporary Challenges to the Security of Global Transport Networks" was held in Baku.
Representatives of special services from about 50 countries participated in the forum, Caliber.Az reports.
The event featured an address from the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to the forum participants, followed by a video presentation on the forum's key topics.
Col-Gen Ali Nagiyev, Head of the State Security Service, noted in his speech that the Baku Security Forum, which was first held in May last year and organized again this year, is crucial for expanding information exchange and cooperation between partner organizations.
He emphasized the importance of coordinated work among special services in the fight against international terrorism and in situations that threaten the overall security system. He noted that this event serves as an essential platform for discussing issues of mutual interest.
Nagiyev added that holding the forum ahead of COP29 is no coincidence, stating that since terrorist acts, often targeting energy transport lines, can lead to global-scale economic and environmental disasters, it is vital to intensify joint efforts to increase the overall effectiveness of actions in this direction.
He expressed confidence that this conference would contribute to developing joint approaches and improving strategies for addressing security risks related to global transport corridors.
The event continued with speeches by heads of foreign special service delegations.
In conclusion, it was noted that, on the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, a Baku Security Forum Secretariat will be established and will function permanently in Baku.
The scourge of terrorism is not a new phenomenon for Azerbaijan as it has experienced this menace starting from the 1980s.
There are documented facts about terrorist activities initiated, committed or orchestrated by Armenia within the territory of Azerbaijan claiming thousands of innocent lives. Since the late 1980s, when Armenia openly encroached upon the territory of Azerbaijan and launched military aggression against its territorial integrity, Armenian terrorists have repeatedly committed terrorist acts in the territory of Azerbaijan. Some of them still enjoy impunity and have not been brought to justice yet.
Azerbaijan has made and continues to make consistent efforts to bring its national legislation in line with international legal instruments on different aspects of the fight against terrorism. It has acceded to all 12 international conventions on counter-terrorism.
