Azerbaijani temporarily suspends gas supplies to Bulgaria
Natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan to Bulgaria have been temporarily suspended since January 7, 2025, due to technical issues, Bulgargaz reported.
The disruption, which was notified by the Azerbaijani supplier on January 6, is expected to last until January 11, 2025, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Despite the temporary halt in supplies, Bulgargaz quickly secured substitute gas volumes through an agreement with Turkish company BOTAŞ. This swift action helped avoid additional costs and ensured stability in the regional natural gas market.
Azerbaijan delivers natural gas to Bulgaria via the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector, which has a capacity of 3 billion cubic metres per year. There is also potential for the capacity to increase to 5 billion cubic metres annually.
As a result, the interruption did not lead to additional costs for the company in securing substitute natural gas and did not affect the natural gas market in the region, Bulgargaz added.
The company also confirmed that the swift measures taken prevented potential disruptions in supply to consumers.
