Baku Coalition advances global dialogue on sustainable cities at COP30
On the sidelines of the COP30 climate conference, the Baku Coalition for Sustainable Urban Development, established during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship at COP29, held a series of panel discussions.
According to local media, the event was organised by Azerbaijan’s State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture with support from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).
The discussions were moderated by Cecilia Kinuthia-Nyenga, Director of a UN-Habitat Secretariat unit. Opening remarks were delivered by Yalchin Rzayev, Chief Negotiator of COP29, Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, and representatives of international organisations.
They highlighted the significance of the Baku Coalition as a platform for exchanging experiences and coordinating joint actions to address climate challenges at the urban level.
Panel participants included representatives from UNEP, WRI, and relevant agencies from Türkiye, Kenya, and Brazil. Speakers emphasised the need to strengthen intersectoral collaboration in order to build sustainable and healthy cities.
Concluding the event, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev noted that the coalition will continue its work beyond future climate conferences and will engage in other global platforms, including the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13), which will be hosted in Baku.
