Baku Initiative Group urges global action on colonialism’s lingering impacts
The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has released a groundbreaking report titled Stolen Prosperity: How Colonialism Suppresses Economic Freedom in Overseas Territories.
The report was unveiled on December 14 to mark the Day of Decolonization, an occasion dedicated to addressing the lingering impacts of colonial rule, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Speaking at the event, Abbas Abbasov, BIG’s Executive Director, emphasized the report's focus on the environmental and economic consequences of colonial policies.
According to Abbasov, the report highlights the alarming extent of deforestation in these territories, the severe environmental degradation, and the resulting economic regression.
“Our goal is to raise awareness, ignite discussions on these challenges, and urge the international community to take collective action.”
The report sheds light on the underdevelopment of tourism sectors in territories under French control, despite their evident potential. Abbasov stressed that colonial practices have hindered the diversification of these economies, leaving them overly reliant on imports.
Elgun Hajiyev, Head of Department at BIG, presented additional findings during the event. He pointed out the stark economic disparities between French overseas territories and other regions. “There is severe discrimination in the territories under French control,” Hajiyev remarked, referencing research conducted in both France and its overseas territories.
“These economies remain entirely dependent on imports, stifling their potential for growth and self-sufficiency.”
The BIG report calls for international cooperation to address these injustices, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable economic policies and environmental restoration in post-colonial territories.
